I'm trying to take a more traditional approach to drawing/painting.... I have so much to learn and this past year, especially the summer, has been extremely.... illuminating to me. I see a lot of the problems in how I approached learning to draw, namely what to focus on and not getting much peer review/criticism.

That is my sketchbook at conceptart.org....Be warned, it may hurt your eyes, for it is where I frequently bombard the attachment manager with a large quantity of crappy-yet still very hard worked on- sketches. I'm still learning digital painting though, won't give up on it any time soon.

I am trying to get into a drawing class at school this semester. I think it'd be a good opportunity to learn how to actually use line well.

Bahhh, I have to get back to reading some stuff about rastering and modeling and some stuff on Navajo music.....

I copied some photos that I found on google

I have absolutely no right to them, you can find what I used for refs if you search 'forest', and the fourth one I just made up

This still ife I did at school for part of a website project. The second image is from my imagination, but I tried to take elements from the still life and warp them. I color-picked from the still-life so all the hard work was already done

HEre are a bunch of crappy still lifes, I know some of the forms are warped and the cards are a failure, but lets just say I was focused on the colors and all that will be conveniently excused

WIPping up a new project

I am creating a card set with suits of augmented, diminshed, major and minor. The King will have whole notes on the card corners; the queen,half notes; the jack, quarter notes, and instead of a 10 card I will have a princess card with eighth notes.
These are the queens I am working on. I started the augmented king too. I am not referencing these, or at least not heavily. I have a small mirror that I glance into when I need to fix something at anytime, or maybe for the rough sketch or value sin the beginning. I know that they mostly resemble me, I don't know why that happens, it's mostly because of the eyes. This is a habit I really need to fix.

Anyways, I am really excited to go home tomorrow evening for thanksgiving break. My voice is very sore because I over-practiced for some of the million songs for thanksgiving service on sunday. The soloists sounded very very good. After I have rested enough for my voice to heal I'm going to try to practice more efficiently, to get more out of practice, so that this doesn't happen again and I will get better.

This morning, actually yesterday(monday) mornign I woke up around the time that my art class ends. AND IT WAS MY CRITIQUE DAY!! I couldn't believe it, but my professor said I can still turn in my project, but I feel awful about missing class.... I don't know why I didn't wake up.

Today, also, I had this lab for compsci linear algebra and I did most of it ahead of time so I thought I'd be able to get out early....BUT PYTHON HAS SO MANY PROBLEMS and I had to stay the entire two hours and it still wouldn't even work and I think the tas were kinda annoyed that I just left without finishing. BUT THATS NOT ALL--I went back to my room ssh-ed into the lab-ran my code.....and it worked...IT WORKED....IT WORKED so I tried to email in my results, but I'm probably going to get no response because that ta never responds to my email.

anyways, I am reeeeaaaallly excited to go home (tonight!)!

I think I did this a couple weeks ago, and I'm procrastinating hw, this is soooo awesome, ohohoho, just kidding, I need to do more real people studies

and this is from one time when I thought it was going to be no problem to start drawing a comic....you know because I had started with photoshop and all.....and I realized that lines are HARD to refine so I ended up just giving up

hey I know, I should attempt some vanderpoel studies on photoshop, I've copied like all of those pictures in my sketchbook, perhaps in a very unimpressive way, so yeah, lets do it again!

you can get desaturated colors using the r g b sliders, so now I think in RGB instead of Black-Vibrant-White

photoshop is awesomers
one of my roommates showed me how to use 'dodge' and 'burn' effectively
however I don't think they are tools that should be used so easily. They seem like tools to be used only in exceptional cases. Nevertheless, good information, but I don't like to rely on tricks and whatnot.
yeah here me say that and look at all the circle rainbow, bubbles and spray paint below....goood to experiment, right? :) Oh yeah, now that Mondar and I have finished avatar we're getting into a series Black Butler.... Ciel is awesome, and Sebastian too. Yeah

k just put this one on too. Kinda hard to find the colors I want the way that the color selector tool is set up on ps, it's much better on painter, with the three corners of white, black, and most vibrant. Also I still cannot blend in ps and the blender in painter is awesome. I think a couple years ago that I actually only EVER painter with the blunt blender. I'd set down the color then use the blunt blender to do all the rest of the work. I made a few tutorials employing that kind of working, but went I got back to painting this summer I didn't use it to that extent anymore.

here's some painter doodles, unreffed stuff, because the life portrait i tried to do the other day is stupid
but im pretty happy with most of these

by 'cheap coloring' mean rendering in greyscale first then painting colors on a translucent layer over it.......'real coloring' is straight opaque coloring :P

Photoshop is awesome I can actually paint in a pretty decent way on photoshop
the possibilities will be endless
however, blending and finding colors are still better in corel painter
but I'm pretty much converting from painter to ps now so yeah

I can tell you what I'm supPOSed to be doing right now....

and here is a still-life that looks kinda bleerrgrgish

the colors I wanted I think were not in the computer but I still wanted the cup to glow so the colors went all crazy, but I guess that is something I am going to have to get better with. And some random stuff that I start and don't finish...did some photo studies too, so I could get better at colors and then use that knowledge...but I'm better off not mentioning those anymore :)

wow, I really need to work now, I'm already screwed that is its 5.30

well maybe not, but we'll see. It seems to be less frustrating to not use a reference for people at the moment, which is kinda weird for me. Kinda liked how the one below was coming out, but I really need to work, however, maybe I'll finish it after I do a substantial amount of work....I should probably eat now too.

here's a nice rough study of a deliberate still-life. Salt from the dining hall, a pumpkin my mom bought me before I headed back to school on Monday, the box from my former roommate, and the branch from outside :)
I should probably do some work now, seeing as I'll want to get it out of the way to enjoy family weekend--everyone's coming up tomorrow!

Haven't updated in ages, here are a couple of portraits from a long time ago. Haven't been finding much time recently to paint, but sometimes I have a few minutes to draw in my sketchbook....but usually those few minutes become an hour that I never had in the first place... ^_^

I need more practice painting people. I will try to do some photograph studies this month of people, I can't believe it's practically the middle of the October already!

I was working on some cs work till realized the colors on my still life props are so beautiful, so I took about an hour and a half to finish and start another still life. Building a RAM was also kinda getting on my nerves too.The real work for the school year has started. That makes me very sad. I am very excited to go to choir tomorrow because I have been practicing the song, so I hope I get a good start to tomorrow. Chelserrhea called me today, I will give my mom and chelsers a call, maybe talk to Mondarsss too :)

Yesterday my mom said that I should get some sort of flower or something that won't rot so bad as fruit does, so I picked up one of the today from a fallen tree branch near one of the frat houses

Here is a wonky study of a box that contains a cute little craft that my former roommate gave me. She is a really cool kid that I am glad to know. Oh yeah, last Sunday was my first day with the choir at service. It was 17th Sunday after Pentecost, or Blessing of the Animals. People were allowed to bring their pets to be blessed, and it was raining that day. Several people brought their dogs. Sometimes they whimpered or barked during the service or during the songs. Most of the songs were from a book called Benedicite, I really liked them. There was even a cellist who played with us, very very very powerful music. I can't believe that I actually have time to paint still, I'm bracing myself, however, for the real onset of the semester. Lastly, I am sorry to say I threw out the pear and the orange today....my roommates wanted out with the pear after they learned it was getting fuzzy....and I threw out the orange (which is older than the pear) too so they could keep one another company....

Okay, everyone and anyone will look like a master artist next to what I'm posting today
remember that horribly disproportionate self-portrait? Well, yes I am going to post it, in fact next to another one which is no better.
But seriously, I think I am learning something by sketching from life. If I were able to fit in some painting time more often I am sure this self-portrait exercise would help me to become more used to skin-tones. I am surprised I even said "Hey I am going to sketch or an hour" today, so this progress might go pretty slowly.
Anyways, I have a had an unpleasant cold for a while, I am practically over it now, but it limits my range and makes me sound like a grating crow whenever I try to sing, I'm sure my roommates must be having a hard time coping with it..... so I hope that I'll be better by thursday. As or my art class, there are now 19...yes NINETEEN people registered! The professor is very kind, because many people need very badly to take the course....but we are all squished in a little room. My first project for the class, due tomorrow, is a power-point presentation style artistic representation of a site.........my site...the playground....I think I make collect more images for the thing tonight

And because I really have nothing to post I just did a still life of the pair and the orange...they're both the same color now with lots of flat sides and the pear is all brown and soft on the dents

Just finished a study of the orange and pear. Haven't done much digital painting, but I have managed to fit in a few things between classes.
I fortunately did get into that art class...it's a class meant for 12 people...the instructor said he'd take up to 16 students...I am the seventeenth registered....YAY! I went to the choir rehearsal yesterday evening. It is a very talented group and I have much practicing to do before I can jump to a high-a or sight-read like they can, but I will get there because they are great encouraging people. Unfortunately my throat has been getting sore since yesterday morning....now I'm coughing, sneezing, and blowing my nose lots--but it's not that terrible....
I've been doing some pencil sketches....but for some reason everything I draw in pencil looks as if it is made of metal because of my shading. So somehow I need to fit in more painting. I oftentimes find myself in a very color-sensitive state in which I feel I can color-match from a palette in my head.....other times not so much. I did a color study of myself with a mirror....I think i did learn something from the colors....but because I gave the proportions no attention....I feel I shouldn't post it until I put some better effort into another portrait study.....

Woke up a little late today--still need to get dressed and eat (it's 2.11), did lots of studying yesterday, I write all my school notes in a moleskine notebook because it makes me feel more organized

I drew the orange yesterday, I got lazy on the weird object, and then I tried to capture the colors in a pear

and this is something quick i just did now, the face got kinda wonky, but other than that I think its somewhat decent--Actually, looking at it now---eugh--click for full view--its a little better

On friday I don't have class till 2.00 pm, but I still get up at 8.30 for studying. I was reading some boolean logic stuff that I already kinda learned last year, but for computer systems, I guess it meakes sense to study it from a different perspective. After I did some reading, I did some painting studies. Also, the choir director of a nearby church has replied to my email, I got a very thoughtful reply, and I think I m going to attend their practice next thursday and see how it goes. Maybe I'lle-mail some of the other local choirs too.

First Post!

Hello there, several days ago I decided to be like everyone else and I created this blog--so I may post my crappy sketches!! But it's not till I find myself bored and moved into school to actually make a post. What I am hoping to get out of this blog is my own attention focused on painting. My dream is to become a very skilled painter someday and to be able to make pictures for stories and comics. My goal is to sketch nearly every day--as often as I can--digitally. Digital sketching makes me nervous because digital tools do not offer such great control--but they are still awesome tools! So I will have to do lots of practice, and I am certain it is something I will enjoy, as drawing has oftentimes put away my anxiety--sometimes it lets me to be anxious too though. I have moved into y Rhode Island dorm room with great help from my parents and it is very cozy here, but things can get very hectic at school, as I am sure many people know. Here are a few halfway-decent sketches and the last two pictures are studied from a book of American landscapes it is called "America the Beautiful" by courage books.
